STEEL
DOORS

Steel doors are the core door set type for utility, service and fire-rated openings in public, residential and industrial buildings. DPS designs and manufactures them to suit each opening: utility and fire-rated EI 30 — EI 120, smoke-tight, glazed, double leaf and with transoms, as well as access hatches and inspection panels. We take care of the specification, site survey, shop drawings (KMD), manufacturing at partner production sites, installation and as-built documentation.

Steel doors

01 · CONSTRUCTION

STEEL DOOR
CONSTRUCTION

FRAME
Pressed steel profile, rebated or wraparound, with anchor or expansion fixing. The frame type is chosen to suit the wall: concrete, brick, aerated concrete or plasterboard partitions.
DOOR LEAF
Two skins of cold-rolled or galvanised sheet on an internal frame. Leaf and sheet thickness depend on the required fire rating and the load on the opening.
CORE
Basalt mineral wool slabs in fire-rated and acoustic doors; honeycomb or mineral wool core in utility doors. Density and thickness are selected on the basis of the tested construction.
SEALS
Perimeter seal along the rebate and intumescent strip that expands under heat to close the gaps. Smoke-tight versions add an automatic drop seal or bottom seal.
HINGES AND DOG BOLTS
Hinges are sized to the leaf weight and frequency of use. Dog bolts keep the leaf in the frame during a fire and resist forced entry.
FINISH
Polyester powder coating to RAL after surface preparation. For wet and external areas — galvanised sheet or stainless steel.

TWO-TONE FINISH

Different colours for frame and leaf, or for the outer and inner faces. Lets the door match the interior on both sides of the opening.

04 · GLAZING

GLAZING
AND VENTILATION

  • Fire-resistant glass — laminated glass with interlayers that foam under heat; used in EI and EIW doors, and the glass class must match the door class.
  • Safety glass — toughened or laminated glass in utility doors that does not break into dangerous shards.
  • Wired glass — an economical option for utility doors and vision panels in back-of-house areas.
  • Vision panel shapes — rectangular, round portholes and vertical strips; sizes are limited by the tested construction.
  • Ventilation grilles — louvred and fire-rated grilles in the leaf for air supply to ventilation plant rooms, boiler rooms and electrical rooms.

TECHNICAL
PERFORMANCE

EI 30 — EI 120

FIRE RATING

The rating is set by the design and the fire barrier requirements. For glazed doors — EI or EIW according to tests.

EIS 30 — EIS 60

SMOKE TIGHTNESS

For smoke lobbies and smoke-free stairwells. Confirmed by smoke leakage tests.

UP TO 2400 MM

CLEAR OPENING HEIGHT

Typical range for swing leaves. Taller openings are closed with transom door sets as designed.

50 — 70 MM

LEAF THICKNESS

Depends on the fire rating, core and acoustic requirements. Confirmed in the shop drawings (KMD).

UP TO 42 DB

SOUND INSULATION

For acoustic versions with an enhanced core and seals. The value is confirmed by a test report for the specific construction.

RAL / ZN / AISI

FINISH

Powder coating, galvanising or stainless steel. The choice depends on the operating conditions.

Values are indicative; the actual performance of each construction is confirmed by certificates and test reports and recorded in the design documentation.

06 · HARDWARE

HARDWARE
AND EQUIPMENT

  • Door closers — overhead slide-arm or scissor-arm, with adjustable force and speed; mandatory for fire-rated doors.
  • Selectors and flush bolts — ensure the correct closing sequence of the leaves of a double door.
  • Panic hardware — push bars and handles that open the door in one movement along the escape route.
  • Fire-rated locks — mortice locks and latches tested as part of the door; cylinders for master key systems.
  • Electromechanical hardware — electromechanical locks, electromagnetic hold-opens, position sensors and integration with access control and fire alarm systems.
  • Automatic drop seal — lowers on closing and seals the gap under the leaf without a step in the floor.

09 · FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

What is the difference between EI 30, EI 60 and EIS 60 fire-rated doors?

The number is the time in minutes for which the door holds back fire: E — it keeps its integrity, I — the unexposed side does not heat above the permitted limit. EI 60 holds for 60 minutes, EI 30 for 30 minutes. The letter S means smoke-tightness: an EIS 60 door also blocks smoke; such doors are installed in lift lobbies, smoke lobbies and on escape routes where the design requires smoke protection.

What is a Type 1 and Type 2 fire door?

The door type is defined by its fire rating under Federal Law No. 123-FZ: a Type 1 door is EI 60, Type 2 is EI 30, Type 3 is EI 15. The door type depends on the type of fire barrier it is installed in: a Type 1 fire wall or partition usually requires a Type 1 door.

Which doors in a building must be fire-rated?

Doors in fire walls and partitions, exits to stairwells, doors to plant rooms — ventilation plant rooms, heat substations, electrical rooms, stores — lift lobbies and smoke lobbies. The specific locations and ratings are set by the fire safety section of the design; we select doors to the project specification.

What fire rating is needed for a stairwell door?

The rating depends on the required type of fire barrier and is set in the design. Most often it is EI 30 or EI 60; for smoke-free stairs and smoke lobbies — an EIS version. We check the door schedule and select a construction backed by test evidence.

Can a fire-rated door be made in a non-standard size?

Yes, within the sizes confirmed by tests of the construction. Taller openings are closed with a door set with a transom or side panels that form part of the certified system.

Is the fire rating retained with a decorative finish?

Only if the finish build-up has been tested as part of the door. That is why we agree the facing material in advance and record it in the documentation.

What documents are handed over at completion?

Certificates of conformity, product data sheets, test reports, installation certificates and as-built documentation. The package is compiled per the door schedule with the project door references.

Can an electromagnetic lock be fitted to a fire-rated door?

Yes, provided the lock is compatible with the construction and releases on a fire alarm signal. We agree the wiring diagram with the low-voltage systems designer.

How long does it take to manufacture a batch of doors?

Lead time depends on quantity, types and finishes and is fixed in the contract once the shop drawings (KMD) are complete. Splitting the order across several production sites lets us keep to the programme on large projects.
